Train your crew on site without stopping the line.

Your crew practices your own procedures on your own site, and learns to build parts in 3D and protect the files that make them.

What you get

  • Short sessions that fit a shift changeYour crew practices its own shutdown and hazards in simulation, not on the floor.
  • A 20-minute demo firstYour trainer and two or three of your people try a scenario from your field, then we debrief together.
  • One team, one scenario, one measured resultYou choose the team and the skill. We agree on what to measure before we start, and report what happened, good or not.
  • 3D printing with security built inLearn printer parts and print jobs in VR, and see how a tampered design file changes a printed part.
  • Cost spread across learnersOne Mobile CAVE serves many sites and fields, so no single site carries the whole cost.

Deep Dive

For grant officers and engineers.

Immersion in Motion · For clientsHow a plant pilot works

Steps

  • We ask what stops you from training more people in your field.
  • A 20-minute demo on your site, with your trainer and a few of your people.
  • We debrief together and agree on one scenario from your own work, worth building for your crew.
  • Your pilot scenario is chosen with you after the demo, then built or licensed with you.
SP-05 · For grant officersManufacturing technologies and cyber-additive XR

What it is

The manufacturing domain of the Mobile CAVE, aligned with the NSF project Enhancing Additive Manufacturing Education with Cybersecurity and Virtual Reality (award DUE-1915520, IUSE: EHR). Learners see how a part is built layer by layer and how the digital file behind it can be attacked.

Reported outcomes (from the student team)

  • 100+ STEM students trained annually in a VR-infused cybersecurity-additive manufacturing curriculum.
  • A 20% improvement in computational thinking and problem-solving skills, measured with pre- and post-assessments.

National partners named in the deep dive

  • America Makes, the national accelerator for additive manufacturing and 3D printing
  • Penn State's CIMP-3D (sub-award for the VR cybersecurity modules)
Lab 01 · For engineersMetal 3D printing lab

Machines shown in the lab videos

  • InssTek MX-Lab: metal powder blown into a laser beam (directed energy deposition)
  • Aconity3D: laser powder bed fusion
  • EDMMax 434W wire EDM
  • Mazak Quick Turn 20 CNC lathe
  • Hysitron TriboIndenter TI 900 series nanomechanical tester

Metals and status

  • Metals listed: aluminum, Inconel 625 and Inconel 718.
  • Being set up now, mainly for graduate research.
  • Southern University is a Silver member of America Makes and the first HBCU to join (2017).
Lab 02 · For engineersPolymer 3D printing lab

Two campus labs

  • Additive Manufacturing / Entergy 3D Design Lab (Room 118): 3D design and printing
  • Polymer Processing and Characterization Lab (Room 448): making and testing polymer materials

Pathway

  • VR modules teach printer components, print preparation, print job operations and quality control.
  • The capstone: learners design, print, inspect and present a part with an instructor, at a print station that travels with the Mobile CAVE, at a partner site, or in the campus labs.
  • VR prepares people; it does not replace hands-on skill.
